I Wish The World Was Twice As Big and Half Was Unexplored

In today’s day and age, more and more people are becoming restless with their local surroundings.
It is not a lack of patriotism for the person’s country, city or town, but rather a return to our explorer instincts…a deep tapping of a well that has never run dry.

Humans have always explored the world around them.
Whether it be the plants and animals in their area, walking hundreds of miles to new territory, or setting sail for uncharted lands across vast oceans…Human beings seem to have an innate desire to know the unknown.

Back in the golden days of global exploration, potential travelers faced many obstacles, including lack of funding, incomplete maps and broken navigation equipment, the threat of food shortages and malnutrition, and also, the danger of encountering new people that were hostile to the idea of being visited.

Today the idea of travel and exploring takes on the sepia-toned, dusty hue of an early Indiana Jones movie…all adventure and boot-stomping…but back in the early centuries, your first journey could also potentially be your last.

Thankfully, today’s younger generations have taken up the centuries-old tradition of testing out new waters…2014 Tourism Industry trends point to growing numbers of ‘Millenials’ (18-20 year olds) who will lead the way to more urban locations with plenty of opportunity to mingle with local people instead of fancy resorts and ‘tourist traps’.

Many realize that simply visiting a foreign country and staying within the perfectly-manicured walls of a foreign-centric hotel isn’t an authentic taste of reality…with the advent of such technology-driven resources as, and, there are plenty of new ways to visit, live like, and learn from local cultures all over the world.

The younger generation is also more globally focused, and want their vacations to have a social impact…’Voluntourism’ is the hottest travel trend of the day, and involves getting locally involved by planting trees, ‘WWOOF-ing’, building homes, volunteering tutoring skills, and many other opportunities that enrich the lives of locals in the chosen location.

Getting to and from your chosen location has definitely improved by leaps and bounds as well…rickety wooden ships and month-long horse rides have given way to lightning-fast bullet trains, airplanes packed with amenities, and cruise ships that could be classified as floating cities.

The world’s largest cruise ship, ‘MS Oasis of the Seas’ has the world’s first living park at sea, and features over 12,000 plants and 56 trees! It also boasts a zipline, five swimming pools, and two rock climbing walls…talk about luxury travel!

The world’s fastest train is currently the ‘Shanghai Maglev’ in Shanghai, China, and has an average speed of 431 Km/h, and can travel the full 30Km track distance in 7 minutes, thirty seconds.

Long-gone are the days of tight, boxy airplane seating, food that tastes like plastic, and boring in-flight entertainment…
Samoa Airlines offers ‘couch’ seats for passengers, that boast an extra 14 inches of legroom, and are the size of two regular seats, minus the armrest.

Singapore Airlines takes it even further and offers cabin suites that feature a stand-alone bed, sliding privacy doors, personal LCD TVs, Givenchy tableware, and gourmet meals with over 60 different options….they certainly know how to make long flights a breeze!

Whatever your reason, method, or choice of travel is, the age-old tradition of crossing new lands to explore the world still stands to this day as one of the most interesting things you can do with your limited time here on earth.

If you’re sad about the idea that there is no more new territory on earth left to explore, keep in mind that anywhere you haven’t already been is new territory….go create your own map, visit new cultures, taste new foods, and lose yourself in the richness of new experience…you will never regret that you did!

The History of Our Flag

Good Morning to all of our blog readers out there!

Today is National Flag Day in the Philippines, and we decided to share a bit about our flag, what it represents, and a bit of our Country’s history.

The Pledge of Allegiance To The Flag –

Ako ay Filipino
Buong katapatang nanunumpa
Sa watawat ng Pilipinas
At sa bansang kanyang sinasagisag
Na may dangal, katarungan at kalayaan
Na pinakikilos ng sambayanang
Makakalikasan at
I am a Filipino
I pledge my allegiance
To the flag of the Philippines
And to the country it represents
With honor, justice and freedom
Put in motion by one nation
For God
for Nature
for the People and
for the Country.

Our flag was first dreamed up by President Emilio Aguinaldo during his exile in Hong Kong, in 1897…and was first displayed in battle, on May 28, 1898.
It was sewn by Marcela Marino de Agoncillo with the help of her daughter Lorenza and Delfina Herbosa de Natividad, who was a niece of Jose Rizal.

Not many are aware, but to fly the flag with the red pointing upwards is a sign that our country is at war, or in battle.
We flew the flag this way in 1899, when the Philippines was at war with America, and again in 1944, when at war with the Allied Powers.

While under American colonial rule from 1907 to 1919, display of the Philippine flag was declared illegal, and again in 1941 under Japanese rule.

On March 26, 1920, the Philippine Legislature legally adopted the Philippine flag as the official flag of the Philippine Islands.
On March 25, 1936, President Manuel L. Quezon issued the final technical description & specifications of the flag, removing the mythical face from the sun, and describing the exact angles of the stars & geometric pattern of the sun.

The Blue Stripe Symbolizes Justice & Patriotism.
The Red Stripe is for the valor of our warriors, and blood shed in protecting our Nation from invaders.
The White Color stands for Peace & Purity, the triangle represents our Nation gathered together…and also represents the Katipunan – A revolutionary group of patriot Filipinos who fought against Spanish Colonial Rule.
The Three Stars represent Luzon, Mindanao, and The Visayas.
The Sun is for our independence, and the eight rays symbolize & commemorate the eight provinces that led the Philippines in resistance to Spanish Rule.

Our flag is a beautiful and thorough representation of our history and unity as a nation.
Let’s be proud today to fly our great flag, and let the sight of her always instill in us a great feeling of togetherness, strength, and honor for our fallen countrymen & women.

Ang kislap ng watawat mo’y
Tagumpay na nagniningning,
Ang bituin at araw niya,
Kailan pa ma’y di magdidilim

Humpday Heroes

Good Afternoon, Lovely Readers!

As you know, Wednesdays are all about honoring those who are doing great things in the Philippines to help the people and communities they live in.

This week we’re not so ready to reveal who we’ve chosen, but we can give some hints for next Wednesday, when we hope to have a full interview!

  • This person came to the Philippines on vacation, and fell in love right away with our country.
  • They decided they wanted to make a difference after seeing children carrying water on foot for long distances in jerrycans.
  • They’re younger than thirty years old, and yet began two major projects in the Philippines…one to provide people with clean water, and one that helps people create a livelihood for themselves.
  • They went on a cross-country ‘Motour’ and have been in almost every major city of the Philippines!
  • Their latest project reinvests 50% of their profits back into the communities….That’s amazing.

Can you internet-savvy types guess who we’re talking about?
Post your guesses in the comments section below, and stay tuned next week to see if you were right!

Music Monday – Tunes for Trips

Good Morning to all our awesome readers!

Are you ready to relax?
If so, you’ll want to run out and buy Tycho’s album, ‘Dive’.

This cd is jam-packed with ten awesome instrumentals that set the imagination ablaze with memories of the beach, long car-rides, majestic mountains, & lush forest landscapes.
The entire journey through this record makes you feel like you’re flying through cotton candy clouds with the sun warm on your face.
Daydreamers beware…you may never want to re-join reality again once you experience this album, and it’s almost a full hour long, so getting lost in your thoughts is a serious possibility.

Artists with similar vibes include Yeasayer, M83, Neon Indian, and Beach House….also some of our favorites.

While the bar area pumps out the dance tunes all day long to keep you energized and feeling good, the office maintains a bit more of a relaxed, quiet atmosphere.

Our Elite Office Geek, Jessica, is a music nerd, and likes everything from electronica, metal, and house, to rap, smooth jazz and classical….so you never know what will be playing in the background…listen carefully and you may just hear your favorite artists!
Of course, she always keeps it ‘SFW’ (That’s – ‘Safe For Work’ for those that don’t know) so our guests will never be offended.

Write some of your favorite bands in the comments below, and we’ll be sure to check them out!
Also, if you know any local bands or artists, we’d love to hear from you!

The Caribbean Vs The Philippines…Close, But No Cigar!

Good Afternoon on this warm, sunny day from your friends at White Chocolate Hills Resort!

We know many of you who read our blog are from other parts of the world, and may be researching a great place to visit on your next vacation. We also know a lot of people like to visit the Caribbean, due to many of the ‘All-Inclusive’ deals you can find on the internet these days.

Here at White Chocolate Hills, we’re a little biased, and of course, think the Philippines is the best vacation destination you can get for your money.

Here is our Top Six List of reasons your next vacation should be in the Philippines instead of the Caribbean.

#6 – The Beaches & Diving

Everyone doing research for a vacation in the Caribbean is always entranced by the pictures of crystal clear water, white sand beaches, impressive dive spots and vibrant marine life.

While it’s mostly true that the Caribbean is beautiful and has nice beachfront…the Philippines has all of that and more!
In fact, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte is home to the longest continuous stretch of white sand beach in the world, and rivals even Hawaii for awesome surfing. Borcay has over 300 white sand beaches, was named ‘Best Island’ in 2012 by international travel magazine Travel + Leisure, and has a vibrant nightlife, for those that like to club-hop & stay up late.

Like we’ve mentioned in previous blog posts, the Philippines is part of the ‘Coral Triangle’….While the Caribbean houses 8% of the world’s coral reefs, the Philippines owns 30% of the world’s reefs…..and 75% of all coral reef species can be found here. We have over 4,000 types of fish, and 6 of the 7 world’s turtle species can be seen in our waters. For avid divers, the Philippines is a treasure-house, and certainly not to be missed.

#5 – Places To Stay

The best part about the Philippines is the quiet, laid-back peacefulness you experience everywhere you go….the Caribbean is obviously one of the most famous vacation destinations in the world, so the beaches, resorts, and towns tend to get overcrowded.
You can easily begin to feel like your vacation is being shared with hundreds of other tourists who had the same idea as you.

The price difference between the two destinations are clear-cut….In the Caribbean, car rentals can cost upwards of $40-80 a day, meals at restaurants are pricey, and hotels and resorts can be almost $350 a night for a good-quality stay.

In the Philippines, you can rent a car with a driver and air conditioning for a whole day for around $20, and if you don’t mind driving a motorbike, you can rent one for about $10 per day.
It seems like every street corner has someone selling Barbecue, Tinola, Lechon, or other tasty eats, and you can buy a full meal for under $5.

And as for hotels and resorts? Our resort is around $90 a night for European-standard accommodations, free Wifi, Plasma Ion Air Conditioning, pool & beach access, and absolutely delicious complimentary breakfast.
A few of the other more well-established resorts around town can be pricey, but if you don’t mind mingling with locals, hotels in downtown Dumaguete can be as cheap as $20 a night if you know where to look!

#4 – Island Hopping

We know this one is a bit of a jab…the Caribbean has 7,000 islands to explore..the Philippines, like any local can tell you, has 7,107.

#3 – The Weather

The Caribbean is a great destination for the cold, winter months…a place to get away and work on your tan…but the rain is unpredictable, and it’s the kind of land area a storm likes to linger around….trapped on all sides by land, a hurricane or downpour can last for days.

In the Philippines, the weather stays at an average of 28 Degrees Celcius all year long…That means you can work on your tan every single day of the year…and we’re beside the equator, so the sun is brighter, and closer to the earth.

When it rains, it’s usually on it’s way to Hong Kong & Thailand…stopping in only to say a brief ‘Hello’!
Since our climate is always (Dare we say…) perfect, a spot or two of rain is usually a welcome guest, and it never slows the party down!

#2 – The Night Life

The Caribbean is known for being relaxed and laid-back…it comes close to matching the Philippines in ‘Rasta’ living.
The downside in the Caribbean is that a lot of places close down around ten pm, and it can be hard to find something to do if you’re more of a night owl.

The Philippines also tends to close up shop on most big business around 9-10pm….but it’s only so they can get off work and go party! The Philippines is absolutely world-famous for being the ‘Country That Never Sleeps’, and could even put the Irish to task with the amount of rum they can drink in a night!
Walk down any neighborhood street to find a group of locals drinking and singing Karaoke at a Sari-Sari….or check out the downtown nightlife at Whynot…a well-known foreign hang-out.

#1 – Tourist Friendly Zone!

There are many different horror stories that you hear about the Caribbean being dangerous to Tourists…it’s a well-known bit of advice that if you stay at an ‘All-Inclusive’ resort or hotel, you shouldn’t leave the grounds without a guard or escort….and walking around can mean you’re constantly hounded by hustlers, beggars, and swindlers.

In the Philippines, your only worry is the problem of meeting too many awesome people in one day….not only is almost every fourth or fifth word ‘Sir’ or ‘Ma’am’, Filipinos are known the world over for being unbelievably hospitable, helpful, and cheerful to foreigners….They are, arguably, even more friendly than Canadians!

There are many children who do beg for change in the downtown core, but if you tell them you have no money, the other kids will learn through ‘The Grapevine’ to leave you be.

And there you have it!
Our Top Six List of reasons your next vacation should be in the Philippines instead of the Caribbean.

Until Tomorrow, we wish you all a great night!
